Review - Wow. A beautiful store, but the prices are a bit mind-boggling. Excellent selection of fish and deli meats and though I don't eat sweets, the bakery looks great. Prepared foods are also excellent; but $5.69 for a Kashi frozen meal? Whoa. The produce is completely gorgeous and the selection is excellent, but I suspect that you could do better price-wise at Sobsey's. For instance, they had lovely organic heirloom tomatoes the other day, but I was not pleased to discover that I had spent $5.30 on a single tomato (large though it was). Great for true foodies who like high-quality ingredients; but don't try to do all of your shopping there.

Review - I don't know how they fit so much into such a small supermarket. The first time I went, I looked around for some hard to find fruits, mushrooms, cheeses, and pantry items. They really go beyond any other supermarket in catering for the modern gourmet. The quality of their meat and produce are excellent. The fruit, olive bar, fish counter, smoked fish, bakery, and meats will keep me coming back regularly. Prices are a little haywire, but overall very competitive with the local supermarkets. Since the grand opening, lines have calmed down a bit and they had 6 registers open (3 x 15 items or less) last time I went (just to buy their $6 rotisserie chicken). I agree, the staff is not always knowledgable or gracious, but the store just opened, and I think the kinks will be ironed out smoothly. Now if only they could fit in a toiletries section.

Review - Garden is gorgeous, but you're helping to pay for those nice hardwood floors when you spend $4 on a jar of tomato sauce. Still, there are some decent prices here, and the fish, meat, cheeses, and bakery selections are very nice. . . as is the exhaustive selection of olive oils and vinegars. A true foodie's haven. Unfortunately, the people who work there are as clueless as the staff members at the other Hoboken markets. No, lady, a pretzel roll and a croissant are not the same thing.

Review - The store has a lot of the same kinds of organic packaged goods that several stores in town carry and what appears to be good, clean produce.
But the big thing at this store is that it has a good fish counter, a good meat counter, a good cheese counter, etc. This is a place where you can go and pay ordinary supermarket prices for ingredients for a fancy party.
The store layout is a little like the market area at Grand Central Station. Some people might really like that approach, but I found it to be crowded and confusing.
Also, the lines at the checkout counter were really long. If the lines continue to be long after the store has been open for awhile, then that might be a reason to go other stores when you don't need to use the Garden of Eden fish and meat counters.

Review - I was so excited for this store to come to Hoboken. I am really into fresh, good quality produce and fish. They are a bit on the pricey side, but if it's good quality then i don't mind paying. I do, however, mind paying top dollar for cheese only to discover that it is WAY past it's prime...and completely unedible. This happened not once, but twice...very disappointing to say the least.
On a good note, their fish monger knows his stuff!! I have had some very good cuts of fish and he answers all your questions (which is a plus). Another good indicator is that they only carry in season fish which means every fish they sell is fresh and has not been frozen and then thawed before sale.

Review - Wow. Nearly $17 for a Murray's chicken! These can be purchased at ordinary supermarkets for half the price.

Review - A great place upon the Grand Opening, when everything was priced, SURPRISINGLY (to us locals) not too much above other standardized grocers in town. (It really was the talk of the town...)
Then, not sure when it happened, those prices began to creeeeeeep up to astronomical levels! At first visit their Murray's organic chicken was just about the same as A & P, which led hubby and me, blindly, to think that their prices must be at par all around. Now, try to buy a the Murray's chicken at Garden of Eden and you'll note that you'll be paying about 40% more than A & P! During a recent snow storm, I didn't want to trek to A & P, so I purchased two half organic chickens at Garden of Eden as it was about 30% cheaper than one whole chicken!
Further, all that glitters is not gold--or fresh. We had to return some Sole that we had bought one day in anticipation of a great meal the next. When we unwrapped it for preparation the following afternoon, the smell was overwhelming. The return and refund was easy, but it should never have happened in the first place from such a high end store!
Ditto for some pre-packaged flank steak that looked great on the outward showing side, but was dark (read: old) on the inside facing portion.
Finally, a few days ago, I purchase seasonal blood oranges at G of E at their premium prices only to discover that they were standard small oranges! I couldn't return them as I had taken them on a business trip with me!
I have to wonder if others have also discovered that it's an over-hyped, over-priced supermarket that doesn't satisfy quality and price-conscientious Hoboken shoppers.

Review - As a high quality gourmet shop, Garden is justified in some of their ridiculous prices. . . but so much of what they sell can be had at Basic Organic on the same block for much less. Wallaby Yogurt, for example, costs $2.00 a container at Garden; it's less than $1 at Basic.
